Freedom Over Texas Festival

For 30 years the City of Houston, along with its sponsors have been putting on the Freedom Over Texas Festival at Eleanor Tinsley Park to celebrate our nations freedom! With 50,000 plus gathered on the edge of downtown to take in the music (on multiple stages) exhibits, food and fun.  There is always a variety of music to cover everyone's taste, as well as representing the Lone Star State and Houston.

This years acts included Zach Person, J. Paul and the Zydeco NuBreeeds and Ernest Walker Band on the Liberty Stage.  With John Evans, Band, Rusted Root and Cowboy Mouth on the Dr. Pepper One of a Kind stage.

And holding court on the US Family Health Plan, main stage, were Ms. Brooke Eden, from Florida, bringing beauty and talent!  The hometown band The Suffers, whom I had the pleasure to check out at a previous 2-day event in 2015.  They were followed by Texas Artist The Eli Young Band, not only representing Texas, but Houston by way of Tomball where lead singer Mike Eli grew up.  Mike even took time to introduce, probably his favorite fan, his young daughter.  Who I'm pretty sure got the loudest applause of everyone that day!

This years headliner was Darius Rucker, who has since crossed over to main stream country from his Hootie and the Blowfish days and doing a dang fine job too!  He did songs that covered the spectrum from his new country, to Garth Brooks Friends in Low Places, to Hootie songs, to one of them songs where everyone is waving their arms in the air and jumping around, the man can sing!

Once the musical fun came to an end, the fine folks at the City of Houston Fireworks were up!  The city set off a couple of bottle rockets and a sparkler or two!  The Houston Freedom Over Texas Event is not only shown on the local ABC station, but it is aired throughout this great state!  I've had the good fortune to cover it for the last 3 years, this is one of the musical events you start counting the days till next year as soon as it ends!

Till next time,
Richard Roesler
